The formula

  1. Annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. Full-time is usually 40 hours, so × 2,080.
  2. Subtract federal income tax. The first $16,100 is tax-free (standard deduction), then 10%, 12%, 22% and so on.
  3. Subtract 7.65% FICA (6.2% Social Security + 1.45% Medicare).
  4. Subtract state income tax: zero in nine states, up to around 10% at higher incomes in California.

The calculator below does all four steps for any state. Change the salary to your hourly rate × 2,080, and set hours per week under “More options”.

What about part-time or overtime?

For part-time work, multiply your hourly rate by your real weekly hours × 52. Overtime at time-and-a-half adds 1.5× your rate for hours over 40. A new federal deduction for qualified overtime pay (2025–2028) can reduce federal income tax on the overtime premium. It is claimed on your return and is not included in these figures.
