Your result, explained

On a salary of $90,000 you keep $70,680 a year, which is $5,890 a month or $2,718 every two weeks. In total $19,320 goes on tax and contributions, an effective rate of 21.5%. The biggest single deduction is income tax at $17,520.

The number that matters for decisions is your marginal rate: 32.0%. That means a $5,000 raise would add only about $3,400 to your take-home pay, while every $1,000 you move into a tax-advantaged retirement account costs you only about $680 of spending money.

Australian tax rates for 2026–27

Residents pay no tax on the first $18,200. Then the rate is 15c per dollar to $45,000, 30c to $135,000, 37c to $190,000 and 45c above that. The bottom rate fell from 16% to 15% on 1 July 2026.

The 2% Medicare levy is added on top. People on low incomes pay a reduced levy or none.

Superannuation

Your employer must pay 12% super on top of your salary. It goes into your super fund, not your bank account, so it is not part of take-home pay. If your job is advertised as a package that includes super, tick the box above and we’ll split it out first.

HELP repayments

Since 2025–26, HELP repayments only apply to income above the threshold. For 2026–27 you repay 15c for each dollar between $69,528 and $129,717, then 17c up to $186,050. Above that it is 10% of your total repayment income.
