How a 401(k) grows
Every paycheck, a percentage of your salary goes into your 401(k) before income tax. Your employer may add a match, commonly 50% or 100% of what you put in, up to 3–6% of salary. The money is invested and grows tax-deferred until you withdraw it in retirement, when withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income.
